See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt @ikillnovel #BlogTour #Review @TinderPress

With thanks to the publisher for my copy.

Thank you for stopping by I'm delighted to be on the blog tour for See What I Have Done by Sarah Schmidt. Thank you to Anne Cater for inviting me to join the tour. Today I will be sharing my review but first of all let's take a look at the description for the book...

Just after 11am on 4th August 1892, the bodies of Andrew and Abby Borden are discovered. He's found on the sitting room sofa, she upstairs on the bedroom floor, both murdered with an axe.

It is younger daughter Lizzie who is first on the scene, so it is Lizzie who the police first question, but there are others in the household with stories to tell: older sister Emma, Irish maid Bridget, the girls' Uncle John, and a boy who knows more than anyone realises.

In a dazzlingly original and chilling reimagining of this most notorious of unsolved mysteries, Sarah Schmidt opens the door to the Borden home and leads us into its murkiest corners, where jealousies, slow-brewed rivalries and the darkest of thoughts reside.

I had only vaguely heard about the murders that were committed in the Borden House and I think it was mostly to do with the following rhyme.

Lizzie Borden took an axe
And gave her mother forty whacks.
When she saw what she had done,
She gave her father forty-one.

Apart from the rhyme I had hardly any knowledge of the crime which in a way helped keep the tension within the story intact for me. I was definitely intrigued after the opening to this story and couldn't wait to see how the story would play out. Wondering how a real crime would be mixed in with fiction and how it would all work. It's safe to say that Sarah Schmidt creates a vivid story and the house that the Borden family lived in had an almost eerie feel to it although this was also down to the inhabitants. The beginning of this story is matter of fact and pretty dark which was perfect for grabbing my attention.

Hearing the story from the different perspectives helped move the story along with secrets slowly being revealed. It was so interesting to see this family dynamic along with Bridget who was the maid. How from an outsiders point of view the families life looked perfect but was it really?

The characters definitely have their flaws but I think this actually works well with the theme of the story. They are intense and unpredictable which definitely made things more interesting. I don't want to go into too much detail as no one wants spoilers and it really is worth discovering the story for yourself. There is a fantastic mystery that will hold your interest just as it did mine. It felt as if Sarah Schmidt put a lot of heart into the research side along with making the story a pretty addictive read for me.

Dark and compelling!

With thanks to Anne Cater and the publisher for my copy and invite to join the tour. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.
